Honestly, I think Casablanca is as close to the perfect movie as you can get. It's not my favorite movie ever, but it is so universally liked by practically everyone. I've never met someone, both in real life and on the internet, who says they don't like that movie.

And Shaun of the Dead is great to.

@Fiona:

That's actually one of the small charms of the movie for me. It seems out of place when it's introduced, but when it's reprised at the end and Dorothy is now part of that semi-dysfunctional group, there's a little bit of sadness there. I don't think the climax for the love plot would be as powerful if we didn't experience the group first.

The one scene that stops Jerry Maguire from being a perfect movie for me is the overly long scene of the women's group meeting. I'm a feminist but that whole scene has no place in the movie. Cameron Crowe even admitted in a later interview that the whole thing was ad libbed and featured his mom's local group. It was pointless and didn't add anything of value to the overall movie.

Well, I haven't seen Millers Crossing. I like the Coen visually, but I don't think I can swallow their politics. nor all of the Arkansas accents in "Raising Arizona." You made a great argument for "Shakespeare in love" and I actually agree with you despite my problems with some of the story. The same goes for "Casablanca" Great cinematography in that one, by the way. Still not a fan of Jerry MaGuire, I don't know maybe it deserves another watch. I've just never had the desire. I agree whole-heartedly with you on signs, alot of thought, and heart was put into that film. The cast was amazing, Mel Gibson can say more with his eyes alone than many actors can with a two page monologue. As to being repeatedly entertained I could watch "Saun of the Dead" and "Signs" over and over, but as to repeat viewings Shaun takes the cake. I can (and have) watched that movie several times in one week. One that technically comes close to perfect, "Citizen Kane." Though I think it is depressing, it is an incredible film. However, this could be due to the brainwashing I've received since being at CSUN (Where we have watched it in at lesat one class each semester.) I could go on for another page saying why, just watch it and look at it technically.

I'm back!

I would like to add some older movies to the list:

"Silverado" - the epic return of the western with an all star cast including Kevin Costner, Scott Glen, Danny Glover, and Jeff Goldblum.

"A Bridge Too Far" - The ultimate War movie.

"Chinatown" - I just saw this one this week. Wow! A film noir about a gumshoe tracking down L.A.'s water and the "mistress" of a dead man. Really a great work of art.

"Joe vs. the Volcano" - Go ahead and laugh. This movie could be used to teach classic symbolism and foreshadowing. If you look past the really light, whimsical story and see the whole movie, there's a lot more than Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan doing their thing (for the first time, by the way).

@RedPriest:

Well, obviously, I just whipped this article together without really thinking it through, since those movies didn't make the list. Oh well.

Great list! And I agree with most of them, but frankly knowing you, I'm surprised with the inclusion of "Signs" to the exclusion of less pop movies like "Roger Dodger" or "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang". Have I been misunderstanding you this whole time? Please advise...
