Brice Albert – Biography
Brice Albert has found writing to be a tool by which he can better understand the world. From an early age, Brice has appreciated the absolute nature of non-fiction literature and its ability to channel emotion through fact and opinion. As a child Brice became fascinated with video game publications, often spending the night into sunrise filling his mind with all there is to know in gaming. He has a natural sense of curiosity and a desire to understand the big picture, regardless of how many fine details it may encompass.
Although Brice had an early literary interest in video games, his true beginning as a writer occurred much later. At the age of fifteen, he had become an avid performer and practitioner of jazz music. His early obsession with video game reviews and publication shifted to an extreme focus on all things jazz. From album reviews to interviews, he would spend his afternoons and weekends at the public library reading anything he could find on the great jazz artists of the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. This profound interest led to an informal study with the celebrated jazz author, Bill Minor.
Bill taught Brice the fundamentals of organization and how to achieve lucidity in his literary thought. “Why use an adverb when the verb speaks for itself?” Bill would say. This attention to clarity and coherence has been the theme of Brice’s literary career. Always looking to gut out the extraneous, Brice finds true essence in what is necessary. After writing album reviews and dissertations under Bill Minor’s wing for several years, Brice found one of his reviews in the Monterey Jazz Festival Newsletter and was fairly close to a spot in Downbeat Magazine.
Besides graduating from California State Northridge with a degree in Jazz Performance, Brice has accumulated quite a resume as a performer. He has toured Japan, Eastern Europe, and the West Coast of North America. He has also played at the Monterey Jazz Festival, won prestigious awards and played countless other gigs all over California. This history of performance has led to a deeper desire for artistic clarity and depth.
Currently enrolled at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, Brice plans to cast a wide net into the entertainment industry and looks forward to pulling out a career. Although it is Brice’s dream to become a performing musician, he also has a great interest in composing music for film, video games and other media and, of course, non-fiction writing.
